Elko, NV is located in northeastern Nevada, at the heart of the Intermountain West. It is three hours west of Salt Lake City, UT, four hours east of Reno, NV, along interstate 80 and six hours north of Las Vegas, NV and four hours south of Boise, ID. Elko can be reached by air from Salt Lake via Skywest Airlines, and from Las Vegas and Reno by Scenic Airlines. Amtrak services Elko as well as Greyhound Bus lines.

Elko County is the third largest county, in area, in the continental US. Northeastern Nevada is the largest Gold producer in North America and the third largest in the world. Historically, Elko has been a rail center for the mining and ranching concerns since the late 1800s.

More recently Elko has become a destination area for tourists seeking a rural setting to enjoy the great outdoors. Elko County abounds with backcountry trails, great fishing (both lake and stream), and hunting. Elko has recently been voted one of the top ten snowmobile areas in the world.

There is an abundance of cultural festivities throughout the year, such as the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering, the National Basque Festival, and the Annual Mining Expo, to name just a few. For a complete listing of these and other attractions visit www.exploreelko.com.

With a population in the Elko/Spring Creek area nearing 40,000, (47,000 in the county), Elko is still considered a rural community. Some large businesses have elected to locate here. We now have a Home Depot and a Super Wal-Mart. There is also a relatively new state of the art hospital with all medical specialties represented.

Doug grew up in Elko, and after graduating from Elko High School in 1966 joined the Air Force, then the Coast Guard. He retired from the Coast Guard in 1988 and moved to South Carolina, then succumbed to the call of the west and returned to Elko in 1997. He has served on the Board of Directors for the Elko County Association of Realtors since 1998 and as its president in 2004. He also served on the Board of Directors for Nevada Association of Realtors from 2001-2004. He continues to serve on the marketing committee for the Elko Convention and Visitors Center and chair the off road trails subcommittee, and has recently taken steps, with others in the community, to establish Habitat for Humanity for Elko County.
