Elko County is the third largest county, in area, in the continental US. Northeastern Nevada is the largest Gold producer in North America and the third largest in the world. Historically, Elko has been a rail center for the mining and ranching concerns since the late 1800s.
More recently Elko has become a destination area for tourists seeking a rural setting to enjoy the great outdoors. Elko County abounds with backcountry trails, great fishing (both lake and stream), and hunting. Elko has recently been voted one of the top ten snowmobile areas in the world.
There is an abundance of cultural festivities throughout the year, such as the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering, the National Basque Festival, and the Annual Mining Expo, to name just a few. For a complete listing of these and other attractions visit www.exploreelko.com.
With a population in the Elko/Spring Creek area nearing 40,000, (47,000 in the county), Elko is still considered a rural community. Some large businesses have elected to locate here. We now have a Home Depot and a Super Wal-Mart. There is also a relatively new state of the art hospital with all medical specialties represented.
