BOTH! The English spelling (ae) is derived from Greek while the common spelling is Germanic.
Orthopaedic surgery is a unique relatively new surgical specialty that was developed in the early part of this century to care for crippled children, hence our symbol which depicts a crooked tree lashed to a straight splint. Until the 1950's most General Practitioner's (Family Practice doctors) cared for fractures with General Surgeons doing the operations. Orthopaedic surgeons are now the primary care providers for all musculoskeletal problems.
