Water Shares Sold High, Leased Low By Golf Courses
Posting Date: 11-30-2010

Sprinklers irrigate the grass at the Wolf Creek
Golf Course in Mesquite. Wolf Creek and the
Oasis Golf Courses currently use low-cost
irrigation water leased from the Virgin Valley
Water District. Both previously sold water
shares to the water district.

In business and finance, the goal is to buy low and sell high.
It appears at least two golf courses in Mesquite have done exactly that.
In the midst of a recent firestorm over requests by local golf courses to roll back rates on publicly owned water from the Virgin Valley Water District and the City of Mesquite, documents from VVWD and the Southern Nevada Water Authority show that one golf course sold shares as the water market peaked in the valley, while another sold shares just before the run-up started, with both courses currently leasing back water shares at a low rate.
The VVWD documents show that the Oasis Golf Course sold 60 shares at $71,422.72 each for a total of $4,285,363.20 on July 24, 2008. [Read full story]

With racing on their minds, the early morning frigid temperatures didnt deter hundreds of motocross fans from attending the annual Winter Nationals motocross event in Mesquite over the Thanksgiving weekend.
On Wednesday, we had over 100 motor homes and travel trailers arrive for the races, said Jason Ellis, track manager. Online signups have doubled from last year and we expect a big turnout. The weather should be good for racing.
As an incentive to spend Thanksgiving with fellow racers, the motocross track planned a large turkey dinner at the track for 300 people, a free jump house for the little ones, pit bike races, Thursday night movies, video games and other fun activities for the kids.
Motocross racing is a family sport and the kids love it, said Hank Morrison from Wyoming.
Hundreds of kids were in attendance and some boys and girls as young as four could be seen riding the tiniest of pit bikes back and forth. [Read full story]

Golf Course Bosses Appeal To Public For Water Rate Rollbacks
Posting Date: 11-26-2010

Golf officials from the Wolf Creek Golf Course and the two Oasis Golf Courses appeared at the Nov. 23 Mesquite City Council meeting to plead their case directly to the public for requested rollbacks on water rates.
The appeal came during the public comments portion of the televised meeting.
Wolf Creek general manager Rob Fuller insisted that proposed rate reductions would not affect water rates for residential users.
"We are not referring to potable water, or what's called drinking water," Fuller said. "We are referring to treated sewer water, which is not usable for consumption, and also to river water, which is not used for consumption.
Fuller then explained that the city would have to treat the sewer water regardless of whether it was used by the golf courses. [Read full story]

community dinner at the Senior Center on

Thanksgiving dinner wasn't scheduled to start until noon on Wednesday, Nov. 24, but the line of people was so long outside by 11:30 a.m. that the Senior Center opened its doors and started feeding people.
This is a very popular community event and people arrived early to share Thanksgiving with us, said Sally Coates, manager of the senior center. We were just as excited to share this meal with the community as the people were. Lots of volunteer effort went into saying 'Happy Thanksgiving' to Mesquite.
Coates gave praise to all of the volunteers and people who donated food and money for the dinner.
All of the pies were donated by the Eureka, the milk by McDonalds and Meadow Gold, rolls from US Foodservice, water by Lex and Linda Hall, and money donated by Thomas Garrard, Kristi Anderson of Helping Hands and Teresa Bowen of Mesa View Home Care and Hospice," Coates said.
"A great example of the holiday community spirit was that of Mesquite police sergeant Rob Stepp," Coates continued. [Read full story]
